Assignment 6 - Danielle/Sandy/Larry/Tamara/Alex

This week we will be searching for a chiasm in Isaiah 43:15-21 (you may extend out verses either way if you wish to extend the chiasm)

Today when we met as a group I explained what chiasms are. If you didn't make it today, I will post a document for the lecture this week a little later tonight (Starbucks wi-fi and my computer are fighting).

Please post by Thursday midnight. Lily and Nicole McG have already discovered their versions of a chiasm so don't look at their previous posts. Try to come up with it on your own.

If you don't think a chiasm exists, you can say that too and explain why. That is certainly a possibility. This work is subjective and we may have different ideas. But the beauty of community is that we can generally come to consensus, and if not, we can gain new perspective and graciously disagree (and then consult scholars to see who's actually right). :-)

Looking forward to what you come up with!

Assignment 5 - Shana/Tony/Lily/Teri/Nicole/Dave

The easiest step of all!  YAY!

The second step in the second part of the Inductive Method (Concentration) is Key Verse.  What do you think is the key verse of this passage?  What verse packs the most punch or summarizes the main point of the passage?  Why?

You may not all have the same answer, but that's ok.

Post by Thursday midnight.  Since this is an easy assignment, if you are behind in the other steps, this is a good chance to catch up.

Looking forward to your posts!

Assignment 4 - Shana/Tony/Lily/Teri/Nicole/Dave

We have finished 1 of 3 main sections of the inductive method: Observation.  Way to go guys!

I'm sure you have observed much that you would not have if you had just read through the passage a couple times.  I'm sure you are beginning to understand the value of this type of Bible study.  You all had great posts this week, and I am personally learning so much from you guys as we go through this together.

I'm late getting this assignment posted so I'll give you until Friday midnight this week.  This week's assignment is very simple though, so it should be a welcome relief from the grueling process of observations.

The first step in the second major part of the inductive method (called Concentration) is finding the Key Words (look at the "Steps of the Inductive Method" post on the blog to refresh about where we are in the process).  Look through the passage (Isaiah 43:15-21) and notice the words that are important to the message of the passage.

Then rank them in three lists (according to importance):

Primary Words (i.e. LORD)
Secondary Words (i.e. desert)
Tertiary Words (i.e. praise)

This is highly subjective work, so you will have different lists but that's ok.  Remember that we are not trying to get the "right" answer, but we are thinking critically about the text and hoping to expose its meaning and then apply it to us (if it is applicable).

In the Concentration stage we are now moving into, we are beginning to make decisions about the text.

Thanks everybody!

Assignment 3 - Nicole/Collin/John/Bonnie/Eric/Yolanda/Christian

Assignment 3 – Last Chance Observations

This is the last week that we will be doing observations.  You guys are getting great at this and it takes practice.  Try to look at my comments to others...they are meant to be teaching helps for all of us.

One more round of observations on Isaiah 43:15-21.  In addition to regular observations, also observe any sections or divisions that you notice and ask any questions that you might have (don’t try to answer them though).  Next week we will move on to the next major section in the inductive method.  It will get a little more fun and not as monotonous.  But every step after this is dependent on making good observations first, so make sure you finish this week’s observations!

Please post by midnight Thursday!  Then comment on at least one other person's post.

Thanks!
