Link to Cultural Analysis
For the cultural analysis, I couldn’t use every suggestion you guys gave, but I mostly focused on three motifs: God as Redeemer, the significance of Water and Wilderness, and the mention of Jackals and Ostriches. I have selected readings on those various topics. It is a 20-page pdf (link above), but I have made it very easy on you...you can skim through and read only the circled/underlined parts very quickly and then read in more detail if you like.
After you’ve read/skimmed through it, please post a paragraph or so of your thoughts and interactions with the readings by this Sunday morning! We will not do this one in three groups...everyone post here.
I would also love to meet this Sunday, April 3 in my office at 10:15 to go over our readings and get everyone on the same page. Let me know if you can make it!
Love studying the Scriptures with you guys...this step has personally given me a lot of meaningful insight into the interpretation of this passage!

Assignment 7 - Nicole/Collin/Eric/Yolanda
Hey dropouts! I didn't get a chiasm from anyone in your group! FAIL! :>)
I guess we could count Nicole's...she posted an attempt in her observations early on.
Hey Truth-seekers!
We were lagging a little on the chiasm but most of you got yours done, so way to go. Make sure you get a chance to look at the one I posted for a different, perhaps more detailed, perspective.
We are going to skip over the outline part of the inductive method because, in this case, the chiasm is the structure of the passage, and an outline wouldn't make much sense when the chiasm is used as a literary method of arranging the content (structure). This happened with our passage last semester as well. We tried to force an outline that wasn't really there.
This next assignment is very straightforward. We are going to do some CULTURAL ANALYSIS on this passage next. To understand the message of a passage (what it meant to the original hearers), we need to understand the historical and cultural background behind the writing. For your assignment this week, LIST A FEW WORDS OR THEMES FOUND IN THIS PASSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT (SPECIFICALLY, THEIR CULTURAL BACKGROUND). Then, I will pick a few from your lists and supply you with some readings on those words/themes. Sound good? Great!

Assignment 6 - Danielle/Sandy/Larry/Tamara/Alex
This week we will be searching for a chiasm in Isaiah 43:15-21 (you may extend out verses either way if you wish to extend the chiasm)
Today when we met as a group I explained what chiasms are. If you didn't make it today, I will post a document for the lecture this week a little later tonight (Starbucks wi-fi and my computer are fighting).
Please post by Thursday midnight. Lily and Nicole McG have already discovered their versions of a chiasm so don't look at their previous posts. Try to come up with it on your own.
If you don't think a chiasm exists, you can say that too and explain why. That is certainly a possibility. This work is subjective and we may have different ideas. But the beauty of community is that we can generally come to consensus, and if not, we can gain new perspective and graciously disagree (and then consult scholars to see who's actually right). :-)
